Hey it's a blog...

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I am brain dead today. Usually I have some idea for a blog the next day, but today I was drawing a blank. I visited a few blogs this morning and made a few comments and went on to Yahoo news, hoping something would pique my interest.

Nothing..Zilch. My mind was uninterested or unwilling to think too hard today. My mind was having none of it. Nothing controversial, nothing to challenge or make one consider options, nothing that would require any contemplation of new ideas or theories.

My mind was rebelling and it was wandering back to a blog written by Sharon, and a comment left by Glenda.

What are tater tots?

I can forgive Glenda for not know about the glory of tater tots. She is clear across the world over in New Zealand. It is not like Columbus or some other explorer actually had tater tots to spread across the new or old world to parts unknown.

Tater tots did not even come into conception til 1953. They became the registered trademark of frozen hash browns by the Ore-Ida company. Ore-Ida standing for Oregon-Idaho. The were invented as a means to use up leftover bits and slivers of potatoes. Those bits of potato were chopped up and mixed with flour and seasoning and the extruded mixture was pushed thru holes and sliced off into small pieces.

Googling for a pic of tater tots, I came across several websites that paid homage to the tater tot and the first one to catch my eye was "meninaprons.net". Almost sounds like a porn site, but let me assure that is not the case. I looked...no naked men in aprons. But there was a steamy pic and recipe for bacon cheddar tater tot casserole.

I clicked on more pictures and visited "myhusbandcooks.wordpress" where there was a tater tot salad thrown down the husband was having with his wife. On "instructables.com" their version of potato salad contained mainly potatoes and mayonnaise, not exactly my ideal use of a tater tot.

Bacon and cheddar wrapped tater tot hor D' oeuvres was the concoction created by "recipegirl.com" and the crazy people over at "deepsouthdish.com" actually combined half of the tater tots inside of their casserole while placing the reserved tots on the top of their creation.

Tater tots deconstructed and made your way was the theme at "seriouseats.com", with pepperoni pizza tots, Spanish chorizo, and sweet poTater tots given up for offerings. It seemed like a lot of work to get added ingredients inside of a tater tot. I don't think I will be making any homemade tater tots soon.

Wanting to be more health conscious? "Vegoutlove.com" combined a bag of mixed frozen vegetables with portabella mushrooms and re-hydrated vegetable protein in their tater tot casserole. They almost had me in their corner til the re-hydrated vegetable protein. I have had extruded soybean protein products and they are like belly bombs. They just sit there in your belly while your sytem rebels at the fake meat intruder.

No matter which way you mix it up, the tater tot has become an icon. Despite attempts to exalt it into a more desirable culinary status, it is what it is. And that is okay, I like you for what you are tater tots. I will take you just baked or fried til golden brown with a little ketchup on the side.

Hmmmmm, though I did come across chocolate covered sweet potato tots on "uniquedaily.com". I might have to consider that for a moment...

  3. I had a set of grandparents who lived in Idaho, and every time we went to visit them, one of the real treats was that their little town had an A&W rootbeer restaurant that sold tater tots . . . probably deep fried because they were crispy and crunch on the outside and moist and tender inside . . . SHEER heaven. I buy the frozen ones for my family, or at least I did when they were growing up and even though I just bake them now, I can STILL remember how delicious the ones from my childhood were. Baked is okay (and I do have a family favorite casserole that uses tater tots) but not as good as the ones I remember . . .

  5. Tater tots come frozen like regular hash browns, the novelty being they can be eaten like french fries, with your fingers or a fork...

  6. Inquiring minds want to know......what do you put in your casserole?

  7. LOL it is VERY easy . . .

You put raw extra lean ground beef in the bottom of a 9X13 pan (I had five hungry kids and a carnivorous husband . . . a smaller pan could be used, and how MUCH meat depends on your personal preference) . . . Then put a layer of frozen (or canned, drained) veggies (my family liked corn best, but other kinds worked) . . . then spread undiluted cream of musroom or cream of chicken soup (I always used the 98% fat free kind and it tasted exactly like the other kind) over that, then top with a bag of tater tots. Sometimes I put shredded cheese on top, sometimes not. The tater tots are crunchier without cheese. Then you bake it at 350 or 375 for an hour and a half (the hamburger is raw) . . . It is easy, fills up hollow legs and for at least my family, a favorite . . .

  8. OMG!!! Bacon and cheddar wrapped tater tot hor D' oeuvres was the concoction ....OMG!!!
Now just try to imagine teenie tiny fingers trying to wrap a tater tot with bacon????? I'd have to get one of my little grand daughters to do it as my big, thick, clumbsy fingers would totally destroy that little bugger all to smithereens WHICH WOULD then turn into hash browns.
Now I have to deal with a drooling mouth .........tater tots.....to die for.

  13. Sounds very similiar to the version I make except I always use green beans and cook the hamburger first...

  14. Lol Misty, it did sound interesting. I think I would cook the bacon halfway thru first and then wrap the tater tot in it to remove some of the excess fat. I might have to go back and check to see what they suggested on the website.

  21. Don't know what are Tater Tots but if you mean tiny potato bits..we have around 100 odd preparations..a large percentage of Indians being vegetarian..potatoes in different sizes and recipes are a staple diet for most. We get potato popcorn , potato fritters stuffed with cheese, ready to fry potato smileys and other such frozen things here though.
