Entry for July 28, 2007 - Tieing Up Loose Ends...

I'm not quite sure how it happened that I have gotten so behind lately. Maybe from being sick, or from having too many irons in the fire, or maybe it is just out of pure procrastination that I find myself having to play catch up. The yard needs mowed, the garden and flower beds need to be weeded, the house cleaned for company next week ...and that is just stuff that needs done in my real life. On here I have e-mail to read, e-mails to send, blogs to visit and maybe a blog or two to write. Out of all of that, I decided on writing a blog. I don't really even have a lot to say, but I thought at least I am taking some kind of action today and at the same time I will be tieing up a few loose ends.

Loose ends, they unravel so easily when you are not on top of things. All week I have been intending to post a reply to Mac's Blog on his Ironic chef week for chocolate recipes. Now it is pretty bad when a chocolate lover as myself hasn't posted even one recipe for last Sundays' chocolate blog. So for you Mac, here is finally a recipe, and for all of the other chocolate lovers out there, be sure to post your chocolate recipe at Mac's. I know tomorrow he will most likely be on to a new ingredient, but there is always room for more chocolate!

CHOCOLATE MINT DESSERT

1st Layer:

25 Oreo cookes that have been crushed

1/3 cup melted butter

Mix the butter and cookies and press in a 9x13 inch pan and set aside.

2nd Layer:

25 large marshmallows

3/4 cup evaporated milk

Heat marshmallows and milk over medium heat, stirring constantly until marshmallows are melted. Remove from heat and cool. When cooled completely, add six drops of green food coloring and 6 drops of peppermint extract (if using peppermint flavoring, add 1-2 teaspoons). Blend in one small carton of coolwhip in the peppermint/marshmallow mixture. Pour on top of the cookie crust layer and chill for several hours or until set.

3rd Layer:

Combine in sauce pan:

1 cup sugar

1/3 cup flour

6 Tablespoons Hersheys cocoa

Mix the dry ingedients together so they are blended with no lumps. Add 2 cups milk (or half and half) and cook and stir over medium heat till bubbly. Cook 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir a moderate amount of mixture into 3 slightly beaten egg yolks (make sure the egg yolks are room temperature). Immediately return to the hot mixture and cook 2 more minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add 2 tablespoons butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Place in a bowl and cover with waxed paper to prevent a skin from forming on top. When pudding mixture is thoroughly cooled carefully spoon on top of the marshmallow layer. Before serving top with coolwhip (or whipped cream) and sprinkle more crushed cookie crumbs on top or crushed peppermint candy.

*You can use a box of cooked chocolate jello pudding mix for the chocolate layer, but homemade is much better!

(One loose end tied up....I feel somewhat better.)

Last Sunday I acquired a new house guest. An orphaned kitten given to me by my grandmother. I haven't a clue how old it is, but it is too small to eat canned cat food and I have been setting the clock to regularly bottle feed the poor thing. I have been hestitant to get too attached to it. I haven't even named it. I have some wierd sense of doom, that once I get attached and named the kitty, it will probably croak on me. But I realized the other day, I was already inadvertantly calling it a name.... I was calling it...."Stinkpot". I know, I know....what a thing to call a poor defenseless kitten. After feeling a few little claws stuck in my arm, stinkpot was the first thing I muttered under my breath. I suppose I should bite the bullet and give the kitty a name. It reminds me a lot of Poss's new kitty Miso, so I thought ...hmmmmmm, maybe I should come up with a similiar Japanese sounding name. So I thought a poll is in order:

stinkpot1">

stinkpot2">.

Entry for July 20, 2007 - Who Dun it?....

Who did it?

That is the latest mystery plaguing the blogging world. Who was the informant that turned in Wukky and Gloggy to the FBI? Rumors are running rampant, fingers are being pointed... Bloggers are in hiding.

After touring North America and visiting many bloggers along the way, Wukky and Gloggy can only hazard a guess until the blogger comes forward to confess..... the suspects are many, but the clues are few and far in between....

Was it Angie, who mysteriously took off on a camping trip only to return on the day of their departure?

Was it Dixie? Still fuming about being left with a huge bar tab?

Was it Joy? Forced to turn them in at the urging of the Amish?

Was it Misty in Canada, doing what she thought was her patriotic duty to secure the borders of her country?

Was it Cyn and JD? Who coincidently left the twosome on the remains of their front porch as they furiously packed their camper and sped off before the big explosion....

Was it Possum? Sent by her government to retrieve the duo,... or perhaps to make sure they didn't make it home at all?

1Blog_National_Enquirer">

It's a scandal....

It could be anyone....

Who turned them in to the FBI?

You can tell me, I won't tell.........

Was it you?.....

Entry for July 15, 2007 - Wukky and Gloggy Visit Nebraska...

It was my turn to host the duo from downunder, Wukky and Gloggy in my great home state of Nebraska. Wanting to make their trip here unforgettable, I took special pains to assure that everything would be perfect for their visit. Knowing how much Gloggy has been hoping to find his elusive mermaid, ....I made my own 'little mermaid of the corn' outfit to greet him in. I knew he and Wukky were both impressed the moment they saw me and Gloggy's eyes rolled back into his head and Wukky started to tremble and shake....

1Neb_mermaidVic">

I flipflopped my way over to the edge of the cornfield and gave them both a huge bear hug. I then started to tell Gloggy and Wukky of the wonders of Nebraska. There was the Henry Doorly Zoo, one of the top zoos in the country with it's own indoor rainforest and desert dome. There was Chimney Rock, Ash Hollow, and archeological digs in western Nebraska where some of the largest woolly mammoth remains have been found. We could follow the Lewis and Clark trail, visit Arbor Lodge, ....home of Arbor Day. There were festivals, country fairs, and rodeos popping up in the hot summertime. We could take a dinner cruise and float down the Missouri River from Omaha, or we could take in a concert at the Qwest Center. So much to see and do,..... I could tell Wukky and Gloggy were excited at the prospects. I then leaned in and whispered, "I'll take you to see where the real action is though, what most people see when they visit"..... "it's the corn".....

1wukkycornfield">.

..... "Just think, the rows go on for acres, and the acres go on for miles and miles....and miles", I told them...As I gave Wukky and Gloggy a guided tour thru the field of corn, I could see they were awe struck by their hushed tones.....

1cornfield_dinner">.

We soon stopped for lunch where I had prepared a huge feast for them of corn on the cob, corndogs, big bowls of cornflakes..... and popcorn to maximize their dietary fiber intake. I wouldn't hear of their feeble protests of , "No Vic, you really shouldn't have gone to so much trouble."... I assured them, that for a gourmet chef such as myself, it was no trouble at all....

1Gloggy_wuk_wandering">.

The afternoon we continued our a-maizing trek thru numerous cornfields, stopping occassionally so that I could point out a particularly nice ear of corn. We examined ear silk, stalks, leaves, checked for corn borers and practised the art of detasseling. I know it was a bit reckless of me to do so, but I knew this was a trip of a lifetime for the two of them, and everyone really should experience corn up close and personal....

1Cornfieldfarewell">.

I am not sure exactly when it was that I realized they were no longer following behind me. I panicked for a moment thinking somewhere I had lost them in one of the rows. After some frantic searching I saw the tops of their heads bobbing above the corn... I tried to wave and yell to get their attention they were going the wrong direction.

I stood there in my pink spandex sparkley mermaid suit in the corn and realized they were leaving me.... A lone teardrop fell down my cheek and I sniffled.....

I knew then that they hated long good-byes and they were afraid of breaking down and showing such emotion in front of me... so they wanted to slip away quietly and spare me the heartache they surely must be feeling .....about leaving me,....Nebraska....and the corn....

I gave them the littlest wave of my mermaid fin ... and sighed.....they will be back again some day....I just know it....

Entry for July 12, 2007 - A Year in the Blog of Vic...

I wasn't going to initially blog on this today. I was going to wait till the wanderings of Wukky and Gloggy were over and the last of their cyber postcards were no longer trickling in.

But today is a bit of a milestone for me and my blog. It's our one year anniversary. I didn't think I could let such a big date pass without the tiniest of a fuss made.

Wow, a whole year....it's hard to believe it has been that long and in many ways it seems like it should be longer than just a solitairy year. At times I felt a blogged a lot, maybe too much, other times I felt I didn't blog enough. This will be my 107th blog over 365 days. Not the best of records, but probably not the worst either. I had hopes of blogging each and every day when I started. Ha! How crazy that notion sounds now. Even I am bored with my life, how in the world did I think I was going to entertain all of you each and every day. I can't even juggle,.... and I suck at hand puppets.

But you stuck with me.

Thru thick blogs when I rambled on, and those skimpy blogs on the thin side. Those first few weeks I had my worries. My friends list was so tiny. So few people that I knew out there in 360. But gradually I found you. Many of you were chat friends of a certain chat room who had migrated over to the more sane world of blogging. Some of you I begged thru yahoo groups to come blog with me and hold my hand so I wouldn't feel so alone. Some of you I happened upon by chance, from a blog of a friend or a friend of another friend. A few of you had reservations. It's okay to admit it now... now that we are friends. I had to coax a few of you....with smiles, silly comments, teasing banter,... and in one instance, with cake.

You accepted me, with just a click of a button. Oh sure, there was a blogger or two that made me wait. Whether out of fear of not knowing me, fear of me being too immature and crazy, or just not having the heart to say no. You said yes, and I am glad you did.

I went and looked back thru a few of my blogs. Some stuff I had forgotten I had written, and there is some stuff that you won't let me forget what I had written. Blogs on recipes, memories, politics, and a blog confession or two.... Gnome blogs, graphic intense blogs, blogs on romance, blogs on my neighbors,... and on my knickers. Most of the blogs I have written I have been pleased about, with an exception of one,... quite possibly two. Blogged on a day of frustration and with a bit of glib, I should have known better. I even had thought about deleting those blog entries,... but I didn't. I am not perfect, and my blog isn't going to be either. You will have to accept me and my blog with it's warts and all....

It's my blog,... and it's me...

I hope in the upcoming new year of blogging I am as equally blessed as my first year....with your friendships, smiles, giggles, and maybe even a thought provoking blog or two. As you and your blog reach your small blog milestones I will be with you as well, celebrating along too.

Bring on the cake,.... and make it chocolate of course!...

Entry for July 11, 2007 - Here, there, and everywhere....

Here, there, and everywhere....is what it has seemed lately of our two down-under friends Wukky and Gloggy as they travel North America. They have been in the South, and further up north. They have gotten lost, panhandled for bus tickets, mud wrestled, looked for mermaids, and roller skated in some caves. They have been wined and dined, and treated to the best hospitality possible by their 360 blogging friends.

They still have more places to go.... They will be heading to Canada, not as an invasion, but guests of Misty. They will visit Joy in Indiana, Mahvin and Bubs back West, Cyn in Arkansas, they even have a time slotted to visit me here in Nebraska.....

They have been lost, they have been confused, and they have been wandering in circles. Forget the maps, forget the compass, forget asking for directions, if you offer free food and lodging they will be on your doorstep.

Their trip is one of smiles, of good times, of giggles, and of meeting people. Two better ambassadors for their countries can't be found. Whether you are connected thru a friend's lists, or just came upon their travels by accident, travel with them thru the blogs... Even better, host them on your blog and tell us about it.

They are up for blog adoption...

Take them...take them please....

But just for a little while...

We have to return them eventually...

*SIDE NOTE: To those who have e-mailed me privately asking for reimbursement for groceries, tickets, entry fees, and for objects damaged or broken by the two travelers while visiting you, sorry that is not an option. To the one person who signed their e-mail "Annoymous", I am sorry about the flea infestation, but thanks for the heads up about the pests......I mean the fleas, not Wukky and Gloggy... (wink).....

Entry for July 07, 2007 - Lunch...

Hey Mahvin....lunch...it's mac and cheese and an orange...

(I know people....It doesn't get any more exciting than this)....

I did hear a rumor going around 360 that Mahvin's favorite lunch guy might be back. Let me know when the guy returns with his lunch blog, and I will pass lunch duty back on over to him....

Can I keep the hair net though?

Entry for July 06, 2007 - What's for Lunch?

The other day I was reading a blog over at Mahvin's and he was bemoaning the fact that a blogging friend of his no longer had his blog up. One of the favorite features of that blog was his daily pic of what he was having for lunch for that day. I commented on Mahvin's blog that I would post my lunch pics but they would be boring stuff...mainly leftovers.

Living in the boonies, I am not privy to take out or fancy meals. Most of my lunches are boring, quick thrown together stuff. However Mahvin assured me that boring lunches were better than no lunches at all, and he needed his "fix".....

So today's blog is for you Mahvin. Till I get a new digital camera, today's lunch comes to you via google...but it was what I actually had for lunch today. Peanutbutter and jelly with two oreo cookies... (I ate the cookies first).

Now I know out of all those friends on my blogging list, some of you with digital cameras surely had to have had a more interesting lunch than PBJ....so this week-end I challenge ya to post your lunch pics for Mahvin...go on and spruce them up with a garnish or even a flower if ya want. Who knows, if any of ya have anything good, I might even trade ya for my cookies...

Bon Appetite'!

Entry for July 04, 2007 - Wukky and Gloggy hit Florida...

FLORIDA VISIT.....WITH THERESA

Wukky and Gloggy arrived in Florida today hoping to meet up with blog friend Theresa after visiting the great state of Georgia. Not seeing Theresa on their immediate arrival, the twosome set off on their own to find her. Contrary to numerous reports and rumors swirling around 360, the two were eventually found by Theresa, and she did NOT try to loose them in the Everglades on purpose....

Hoping to show Wukky and Gloggy all that the state of Florida has to offer, the Everglades and airboating were first on her list of sites and wonders...

1dryride_airboat">

It was while they were visiting the Everglades, Theresa took the opportunity to show the two visitors a real alligator farm. After some tense and nail-biting moments, Gloggy showed all his prowess of alligator wrestling, .... further impressing Theresa of his many hidden talents...

1alligatorwrestlergloggy">.

After the alligator farm, it was off to Busch Gardens for more site seeing and adventure. While there, the trio took advantage of the fabulous rollercoaster rides. It was hard to pry Gloggy's fingertips from the bar of the rollercoaster, ...he was having so much fun....

1rollercoasterbushgardens_glogwukT">

It was only with the promise to Gloggy and Wukky of a visit to Weeki Wachee Springs to see the one and only city of live mermaids that seemed to get Gloggy to budge from his rollercoaster seat. The trio enjoyed the live musical of "the Little Mermaid", with Gloggy on his feet several times clapping and cheering and humming along with the cast. Regretfully... Gloggy,Wukky, and Theresa were shown the door and banned from visiting ever again after Gloggy tried to smuggle a mermaid under his arm out the side door.....

1mermaid_glogwuk">.

***(Mermaid Pic/graphic courtesy of Theresa)***

Their long day almost over, the mention of Disney Resort in Orlando, perked the downunder travelers up, and gave them their much needed second wind. Gorged from all of the cotten candy, caramel popcorn, and sodas they could handle, it wasn't long before they found themselves braving even more rides.... that tested their fearless, nerves of steel....

1teacupride_theresa">

Their evening capped off with 4th of July fireworks in the darkened sky....and being stalked by a rather large rodent....

1sparkler_disneytrio">.

It was with much hugs and tears (mainly of relief from Theresa) that Wukky and Gloggy bid Theresa and Florida good-bye. Pulling out their U.S. map, they plotted their next course.... a trek to South Carolina and to fellow friend and blogger Dixie....

Entry for July 01, 2007 - They're Here!...

It was pandimonium today as Wukky and Gloggy landed on the West coast at LAX. Hoardes of screaming people were seen rushing the gate. Extra security was called in to prevent mob rioting. It was only after word came over the airport's intercom stystem that the two from downunder were only visiting for a short time and not actually moving here, that the chaos was diffused.

police_barricade">

After many promises, numerous threats, and some arm twisting, a small band of 360 bloggers was assembled to greet and serve as a welcoming committee to the two weary travelers. Wukky and Gloggy were soon surrounded by the papparazzi in a flurry of flashbulbs and picture taking....

...(Okay it was actually only one cameraman who looked suspiciously like Jimwoodkrvr)...Loud cheers were heard for the twosome as they walked the red carpet toward their waiting group,... or it could have been the mention of cookies for all, after the welcoming was over....

WELCOME">.

Only the smallest of glitches occurred when going thru customs. When asked if they had anything to declare, Gloggy mentioned he was carrying huhus in his pants. After much debate over who would search Gloggy and his pants, the custom officials waved him thru line while mumbling under their breaths that they are not paid nearly enough for their jobs...

g-day_USA">

Excited to see the familiar faces of their blogging friends, Wukky and Gloggy threw up there arms in greetings while smiling broadly....Theresa was then revived with smelling salts and a small bottle of booze from the flight drink cart. We all hurriedly assured Wukky and Gloggy it must be from the meds Theresa was taking and surely was not from their 28 hour flight of close proximity and lack of a shower or toothbrush.

glider">.

Knowing how anxious they must be to begin their trip, they were soon rushed off to meet their next connecting flight that would start them on their trip across the U.S. With a small push they were off admid a few protests from them. We know they wanted to stay longer to chat with us, but other bloggers await them.....

Next stop on their trip....GEORGIA!
